- Description
- The successful teaching of Chinese as an international language depends on competent Chinese language teachers who are capable to work independently in a multi-cultural environment. Innovation of the existing teacher training curriculum is an urgent task for universities in China due to the increasing programs of teaching Chinese as an international language established in recent years. Consequently, the experiences of teacher training in western universities have become significantly important and valuable for Chinese teacher educators. This paper reveals the current development of teacher training in the West and makes a critique on the traditional models of teacher training. It is suggested that a “reflective model” should be adopted on the basis of deconstruction of traditional concept of teacher training in order to search for a new approach of training teachers in multi-cultural settings through international cooperation. The paper reports a case study of an Australian university which provides evidence of possibility and feasibility of such international cooperation in theoretical and practical levels.
